Tammy's 18th Birthday.  She is a good girl and may go to Maryland where she will be employed as a nanny.  Quite a few of the girls around here are doing this.  Sheree's (Tana) is working as a nanny in Hawaii and loves it.  I think Tammy will do very well.

I have been washing most of the day.  Loye took a load of trash to the dump so I rode up with him.

Josh bought us a great big supreme pizza for lunch and it was yummy.

Tiffy came down so her and I ate an ice cream cone out in the shad of the back porch.

I finally got my kitchen and bathrooms cleaned so Loye took me up to Guayo's where we ate Spanish Food.  Afterwards we went over to Earl and Violet's and visited for about an hour then we came home and I made Josh's bed as I had taken the sheets off earlier.  And now I'm in bed trying to stay awake and write in this book...z z z...

Today started out much brighter than yesterday and would have been a nice simple easy day at work, but Kate decided we had better make cookies, so we did and our really turned into a busy day but at least on Monday we won't have to make cookies.

After coming home and resting for awhile I done the syrup on my pickles and fixed supper early so we could get to the football game on time.  (Snowflake playing Globe in the first game of the season.)

Jason plays in the band this year so he had to be down there at 6:15 so Jared took him down.  Mom went with us to the game but she didn't feel good so since Liza was going home at the end of the 3rd quarter Mom went with her.  Babe McCray had a heart attack during the game and he was sitting next to the top row so the medics had to carry him clear down from there.  I haven't hear how he got.

Snowflake easily beat Glove 28-8.  The cheer leaders threw little blue and white footballs up into the stands, Jared caught 2 of them.

At school today we had baked chicken, potatoes and gravy, rolls, cucumbers, jelly and milk.  We served 341 people.

After work Kate and I went over to the feed store where we each bought a bushel of peaches for $15 a piece, when we got the hoe they were pretty green, but maybe they will ripen.

About 2:30 Loyelin came down with Rick.  He left her here and went on to work.

We all went down to Snowflake to watch Cristina play volleyball on the freshman team.  They played St. Johns but Snowflake won pretty easy.  Cristina served 14 points in a row.  Ann Rogers made the last point to win the game.

Mom came down so I sat on the bottom row with her to watch the game.

When we came home Loye and the boys were home, so I took Loyelin on up to her home in Shumway.  Came back and made supper which we ate then I went to bed.

Geneva had Verlyn give me one of the artificial plants that Verlyn makes and it was really pretty, for writing the poem for Kristen.  She didn't have to but it sure is nice.

Wednesday, September 3, 1986

Today we made more zucchini Bread.  The schwans man came by and I bought food that I couldn't afford, but maybe my family will enjoy it.

I came home and took care of my pickles and Liza and I sent to Snowflake and borrowed a lawn mower from Joe and Stella Williams so we could mow our lawn.  Loye had to put a wheel on it from our old mower and our wheels were much smaller, but it worked all right.  I bought some green corn at the Silver Creek Mill that Carl Cole had raised.  It sure was tasty corn.

Tuesday, September 2, 1986

Today started pretty gloomy but after working for awahile I felt better.  Kathy came to work and brought stuff to make zucchini bread for all of us.  The bread really tasted good.  Not much else today out of the ordinary.  Liza took Jared and Josh to Show Low with her kids to see the show "Karate Kid II".  They said it was a real good show.

Loye and I kept Tiffany, she got sleepy and went to sleep on Loye's lap.  I took her and put her in my bed where she slept until the kids came home.

Labor Day - Shirley Knights birthday and the 1st day of Dove hunting season.  We wanted to start home early today but when Jared and Jason got up to go hunting Jared's pick-up caught on fire.  So they took our pick-up and we waited for them to come back which they finally did, about 2 hrs later then they said they would.  After getting everything ready we went down through Nutrioso.  We had a real low tire so we stopped and asked Terry Reidhead who was out in his yard where we could get some air.  He sent us up the hill to a truck shop.  When we got in Springerville we stopped and got some gas, some nachos and a drink and went on home without incident.

I washed clothes for a while and finally went to bed and tried to sleep.

Sunday, August 31, 1986

Sunday - Jared and Jason went hunting so Loye and I got up and went to look for raspberries but didn't find very many so we started back to camp but on the way we had a flat tire on the pick-up.  So we tried to drive on it to camp but but when the tire about came off we parked the pick-up and we walked on to camp.  We didn't have a jack or a lug wrench.

Jared, Rick Gibson, Jason Gibson, Frank Newman and Jason came to camp so while Jared and Rick went to help Loye change the tire I fixed breakfast and fed the boys and then the men when they got back.

Loye and I went back looking for raspberries.  We found quite a few so we came back and made jam, and went to bed.  The boys came in quite late.

Saturday, August 30, 1986

Kris' Birthday she was 15 yrs old, and getting to be as cute as can be.  After Jared and Jason went bow and arrow hunting of deer, Loye and I and Mandy ate breakfast washed dishes and then we went over to Big Lake and waited for Loyelin and Liza and their kids.  We waited for about 1 hr.  before they finally cae.  We all went to pick raspberries and we had a good time.  We came back to camp and fixed dinner.  The girls had bought chicken and green corn, and we made biscuits and fried together potatoes and onions.  Everything really tasted scrumptious.  After we ate the girls took, Cristina, Sara, Richard, Daniel, Candon, Rikki, Mandy and Tiffany and went home.  So Loye and I and the boys were left all alone.

Friday, August 29, 1986

Friday and the beginning of the Labor Day Holiday.  We decided to celebrate by camping in "The Beautiful White Mountains of Arizona".  And they are truly that, the most gorgeous place on earth.  When I got home from work we started getting ready to go and about 2:30 we left.  Loye Mandy and I.  We got up to Pinetop where we went into Safeway to buy groceries $75 worth.

While there Jared and Jason caught up with us, but Jared was having trouble with his pick-up, it was leaking gas.  He finally got it fixed and we went on.

When we got to Big Lake the road was all torn up.  So we carefully pulled our trailer past and went on to just past "Crosby's Crossing"  where we got there after dark so we pulled off the road by some old corrals.  The grass was tall and green and pretty.  We all went to bed in the trailer but no one slept much.

Thursday, August 28, 1986

Got up and sent all my pickles out to the granary where we keep our canned food  Washed dishes and made some hot cereal (which nobody ate) and went to work.

In the afternoon Carol Hall and I went R.S. teaching to Alice Blakeslee, Bev Wing and Joyce Arvig (who wasn't home).  The lesson was about paying tithing, a principle that used to not be very important to e but as I get older it becomes more of an obsession.   i know it is a true principle from God.  And anytime I neglect to pay it we get behind in our payments and it takes about 6 months to catch up again.  But if I keep trying maybe someday I scan keep some of the commandments my Heavenly Father has given me.  It is my desire to keep them all.  So why don't I?

Wednesday, August 27, 1986

Today is the birthdate of my oldest grandchild (Cassandra Lea) and she is in Thatcher going to school.  But today she is 19 years old with her whole life ahead of her.  How dear she is.

When I came home from work I decided I had better take care of the cucumbers I had so I started making dill pickles and there must of been about 30 qts although I couldn't make 2 of the seal.

Dahl called about 2:00 o'clock and said Loye was on his way home with the trailer so about 6 o'clock he got here.  He brought the trailer home so we can go up on the Mtn. camping.

I fixed some spaghetti for supper since that is Josh's favorite food and he requested it.

Tuesday, August 26, 1986

This week I have been getting up and washing dishes after my shower, then I pick up Kate to go to work  So far we have had nice cool lunches, but tomorrow that will change when we have to use the ovens.

I had the R.S. Teachers come today.  They are Idell Solomon and Ruth Ozment.  I really enjoy them they are sisters and are 1st cousins to Mom.  Ruth is Mom's age and Idell is older.  They are going on a Caribbean cruse pretty soon and they were all excited about that.  They fly to Florida and from there they go to 4 ports along the Caribbean.

I need to keep busy at my pickles until they are done but I sure have a time keeping myself going.

Josh barbecued some steaks for supper and we had fried potatoes and onions, salad, cucumbers and vinegar and bread and butter.  Tasted pretty good.

Jared and Jason watched Simon & Simon and Magnum P.I. then went to bed where I read awhile before going to sleep.  Josh went off with Tony Tate.

Monday, August 25, 1986

School again!  It doesn't even seem like we had a vacation.  But it was nice visiting with Kate, Maybelle, Kathy and imogene.  There are several families teaching their children at home this year.  Carol Hall, Bonnie Doyle, Marilee Neff and Sharon McCleve that we know of, there may be ore.  The Baptists have a private school with about 40 kids attending.  I don't know thy they do this when they could help our public schools.

When I got home I had to go to Show Low to pay our phone bill so I asked Mom and Sheree to ride up with me and they did.  We bought an ice cream cone and came home.  We came down through Linden then over by White Mtn. Lake.  The country is changing so it's almost unrecognizable.  Some of it is real pretty especially the golf course up by Dags.  We went through some mud and got my clean car all splattered so I washed the mud off when we got home.

I have been roasting some chili's and messing with some pickles.  This is really a busy time of year, but I love it.  Autumn is my favorite time of year.

I fixed supper and Jared, Josh and Jason were all here to eat.  We had Taco Salad and now I'm going to bed.

Sunday, August 24, 1986

Sunday - Went to church and listened to Boyd Taft and Naomi Hatch talk  Their talks were on Faith and Repentance and they did a good job.  During Sunday School I came home and set some Jell-o and I got some potatoes and squash ready to cook for dinner.  Also fixed some cucumbers and onions in vinegar  Went back to Relief Society where I had a little part to give.

It has just been pouring rain this evening and now I can hear coyotes howling out on the edge of town.

Loye went back to the valley this evening.  I sure hated to see him go alone.  But tomorrow starts school so I will be back at the kitchen working.  Lunches will be higher this year $.75 where last year they paid $.60.  In the High School they will pay $.90 over $.75 they paid last year.

Mom came over and visited with us for a while this afternoon she is sure getting feeble, and that's the first time she has been here in ages.  I love her dearly and hope she is with us for awhile.

Saturday, August 23, 1986

Got up early and went down to the cannery to can raspberry jam.  There was a big crowd to work, among them was Katie, Maybelle and her mother Cora, Lee Lestiko, Howard and Lucy Moroney, Adell Lee and her daughter Merle, Georgia Hunt, Mary Miller, Gary Feezor, Fred Decker, Wayne and Majorie Linn, Barbara Lamoreaux, Vera Palmer, Harmon Neff and many more I can't recall.  I only worked about 2 1/2 hours, when I got so sick and dizzy I thought I would pass out so I told Harmon who was in charge and cae on home.

Later in the day I went down with Loye and Tiffany and bought groceries.  I really didn't have time to be sick as I washed steadily all day.  Liza left her kids for us to watch as she was playing and coaching ball.

In the evening Loye and I and Josh took Loyelin out to the Longhorn Cafe for supper it was Loyelin's birthday, we ate Prime Rib.  It was really scrumptious.

Loyelin and I stopped and watched Liza's team of girls she was coaching beat an Eager team in the Regional Championships.  Kris played on the winning team.

Friday, August 22, 1986

I decided not to just sit in the trailer all day today so after taking a nice shower, I went down town shopping and bought Jason 3 shirts, Loye 2 shirts and 3 pairs of pants that he desperately needed.  I bought me a pair of panty hose, and on the way back I got a Taco Bell Grande at the Taco Bell.  Oh I also (and most important) had the car all washed and shined up with Armor All.  It cost $18, and I thought it was well worth the money because it looks like a new car again.

When Loye came home (about 4 o'clock) he said he still had some work to do and so we about decided to stay over night in the valley.  But then I remembered I have to be at the cannery in the morning.  So when Loye went back to finish up his work, I loaded the car and met Loye over at Dahl's.  We went by Bob's Big Boy and bought us a hamburger and some onion rings to eat on the way home.  Loye was so tired I drove and we got home about midnight.

Thursday, August 21, 1986

Judy's birthday and I went to see her but she wasn't home.  After keeping the trailer company all day I finally drove over to Judy's where I was supposed to meet Loye, but Judy wasn't home so I drove on over to where Loye was working but he wasn't there either so I came on back to the trailer to wait.  Loye finally came about 8 O'clock and we went over to  "The Bonanza" and ate a steak.

I did write a poem for Neva's daughter Kristen to give at Deron's missionary farewell.

Maybe you wonder
Why I'm up here?
It's cause I'm Deron's only sister
But I'm filled with fear.

When I was born
Deron was 12 years old
And he was real happy
Or, so I'm told.

There were lots of folks
In Taylor he had to call
Aunts and Uncles and cousins
'N Grandpa and Grandma Hall.

I'll tell you a secret
If you will only listen
If Deron would've been a girl
His name would be Kristen.

If Deron had of been a girl
Not that I'm really care'n
And if I had been a boy
Would they have called me Deron?

For Deron 3 wheeling
Was really great
Sometimes he'd take me
I could hardly wait.

When we'd get back
We ate some of Deron's favorite food
Chocolate chip cookies, crunch-berries
Or Apple Jacks are good.

Every summer when
Deron wanted to roam
He would go to Taylor
His second home.

There he'd be happy
With Grandpa and Grandma Hall
He worked hard all day
And in the evening he'd play ball.

While you are gone Deron
You can't baptize me!
If you baptized some one else
How happy I'll be.

When you come home again
Everything will be fine
I won't be so little
I'll be older - I'll be nine.

Wednesday, August 20, 1986

I got up when Loye went to work so I could get the trailer straightened up before I went over to the temple.  Since the wedding wasn't until 11:30 am.  I took my time finally I got over there about 9 am.  So I decided to go through the 9:30 session.  I got my name (Maria Santanna 1874.)  I thought I slept good so I should be alert and bright but I had to fight off sleepiness all the way through.  By the time the session ended it was about 11:30 and I was afraid the wedding had started but it hadn't.

It was really a lovely wedding.  yvonne looked radiant and Bart looked handsome.  Brother Brewer performed the ceremony.  Shum and Cathy's family was all there except Dana (Monte's wife) who is about to have a baby (her first).  Cathy had 2 brothers and 3 sisters there.  There were lots of Judds and from our family there was Uncle Ross and Aunt Ilene and Aunt Mina, Anna Lou and her daughter Julieann, Sheree and her daughter Ivy, Rion Ramsey and Me.

After the session, Anna Lou, Sherree, Julie, Ivy, Rion and I all went over to Matta's and ate lunch.  I really enjoyed visiting with them all.  Sheree and I both wore our dresses alike, mine is gray and Sherree's is blue.  When they took pictures Sheree said we can stand on opposite sides and be the borders.

When I came home Loye was in the shower.  We went uptown shopping at Home Depot.  It was so hot 112 degrees a new record for Aug. 20.  As we rode along in the car I would put my hand out the window and the heat would almost burn my hand.

On our way home we stopped at Safeway and bought a few groceries so we could make a cool supper which we did.

It has been nice being down here alone with Loye.  It has been very few times in our married life that we have been alone.  Although I am not looking forward to being alone all the time, it is nice right now.

Tuesday, August 19, 1986

Staying here at the trailer all day becomes sort of boring  Although Loye does come in as often as possible.  I finished reading President Kimball's book about his life.  He was such an ambitious, and energetic man, even until he was past 80 he never seemed to realize he was getting old, he just wanted to serve the Lord as well as he could and he never wasted time but actively worked as hard as he could.

I knit a while, watch T.V., read, play solitaire then start over.  It is nice and cool here in the trailer.  In the evening we called Judy on the phone in Dahl's pick-up to see if she would like to go with us to eat.  We pick her up and went out to "Red Lobster" where we really enjoyed fish  I had a "Neptune Plate" with all different kinds of fish, oysters, shrimp etc.  Sure was good.  We enjoyed being with Judy, Don was in L.A. after a load of something to bring over here.

At least tomorrow I am going to the temple to watch Bon get married.

Monday, August 18, 1986

Yesterday we came down to the valley where Loye has been working practically all this year.  We bought a camp trailer so he will have a place to stay.  It is quite a nice trailer and is completely self-contained.  I have spent the day reading and writing in my journal, something I have been wanting to do for quite a while.

The weather here is so hot and humid that the best place to stay is right here under the refrigeration.

In the evening we went over to Dahl and Shelley's to celebrate Lindsey's 5th birthday we were there, also Lindsey's Bradshaw grandparents and her Aunt Janet and Uncle David with their daugher P.J.  Shelley served ice cream and cake.  She had the house all decorated with crepe paper and balloons.  Dahl and Shelley are going to move from their house as they have sold it and want to build them a bigger house.

While we were at Dahl's we had a phone call from Roger, Jared, Jason and Liza.  Roger said he had work at home next week if Loye wanted to work up there.  Jared and Jason wanted to know where jason's physical was as he needed it in order to play football.  They are both in my purse (down here.)  Liza said her and Mark would not be down Tuesday to go to the temple with Yvonne and Bart who are being married on Wednesday.

After the party Loye and I came home and went to bed.
It has been so long since I wrote in this journal with any regularity and now I would like to keep it up better.

Since I have slacked off there have been many important things pass by that I haven't written about.

One of the things I must make mention of is that Shanna and Jim are getting a divorce.  It was a shock at first but I really don't think shanna has ever been as happy as she had a right to be, and now I just hope and pray she can find happiness with someone else and also have a family.  She is a good girl and I really want her to be happy.

Roger is being ostracized by Dean Sellers and Pres Eddie Hancock and Pres. Pete Shumway want Roger to sue Sellers for defamation of character.  I hope Roger can do what is best for all concerned.  Roger is a good man and a good father and he has a good wife.

Loyelin and Rick are considering buying a new house and they need one so bad.  They are stuck off up there in Shumway with no car most of the time.  Besides they need a new home for their family.

Dahl and Shelley, I think are doing pretty good.  They have sold the little house that Dahl built, and they are going to rent an apartment until they can build a new house.  They also have my youngest granddaughter who was born June 6, 1986 and she is the cutest baby.  Her name is Amber.

Jared although he has been interested enough a couple of times to get married as yet hasn't taken the plunge.  I'm sure he would be lots happier if he would get married.  he does have a horse and that fact has made some changes in his life.  He takes good care of his horse and he has changed from Rock and Roll music to Country and Western and he now wears cowboy boots.  It does help him to have an interest in his life.  Jared teaches primary ad he is very dependable.

Josh I pray that he will soon get strength to shun evil in all it's forms and go forward and upward.

I love all my children.

Jason is at an exciting age this year.  He is just starting High School as a freshie and he is looking forward to the new excitement of the year.  He was just ordained a teacher.  I just pray that he goes and grows in God's kingdom as well as in school.

I know I have not recorded my happiness about Mark and Liza and their sealing in the temple, we are so pleased and happy about this.  It was such a special day.  They both looked so handsome and nice looking, and when they brought the 4 little kids up to the sealing room it was almost more happiness than my heart could contain  Tiffany patted her hair and said "I pretty", and she sure was.  As Liza was carrying her out of the temple she started singing "Old McDonald had a farm E-I-E-I-O."  Some of the old folks smiled as she went by.

Mom isn't feeling too good.  She is mostly lonesome and we all need to visit with her more  I love my Mother and I want my family to know that she is a good, and religious lady.  She loves her family no matter what they do and she has always tried to support them in almost everything they do, at least when she could.

Many of the families have had weddings.  Rion Ramsey married and divorced Bonnie Ellsworth they had a baby girl Riann.

Becky married and divorced Lloyd Gorman she had a baby girl Jamie Ranae, she later married Gene Shurling.

Linda Reeves married and divorced a man by the last name of Romero but I don't know is 1st name they had 1 child Raymond.

Keeven Willis married Judy ? and I don't know how many children they have.

Stacey Willis married Gary Farr and they have 5 children.

Kristi Willis married Doug Hatch and they have 2 children.

Mark Willis is still at home.

Maybe this will sort of keep things in perspective of who are our main families.

Continued

My own grandchildren are very dear to me.  Cassandra Lea is going to Eastern Arizona to school she has a boyfriend named Harry Wood he is from Thatcher.  I am very pleased with Cassie she seems to know where she is going.  May she always remember to do what is right and keep her life in order.

Tamara Lynn is out of High School and is having a hard time deciding what she wants to do with her life, the last time I heard she was going to school with Cassie.  I think this is the best decision she has made so far even though I know Tammy does not like school.

Kris Delaine will be a Sophomore this year.  She is a quiet, nice and pretty girl also she does well in school and should do great in life.

Tara Rachael will be in the 8th grade and she will be all right cause she does not know a stranger and she is bubbly and full of fun.

Heather Jo is in 4th grade is quiet, pretty and smart.  She will do good in life, everyone seems to like her.

Heidi Jill starts kindergarten and is Roger's baby and she is cute as she can be.  She is friendly and happy and does about what she wants to do.

Cristina Marie is a freshie and is a cute, talented and smart girl.  If she chooses the right friends she will go far in life.

Sara Rae is in 3rd grade and a born chatter-box knows everything about everybody.  She is cute, kind and smart.

Richard Edward Loye is cute, chubby and tries real hard to talk but is hard to understand.  He will go far as he is pretty diplomatic.

Daniel Martin Louis is a real cutie and he is going to be a big boy if Loyelin can fill up his height.  He is good natured and knows how to wrestle all ready as Richard is teaching him.

Jacob - good looking, smart, tender-hearted.  He takes care of his sisters and tries hard to be a good boy.

Lindsey is a pretty little girl.  She talks non-stop and she is friendly and does not forget people.  She always makes people feel important especially grandparents.

Amber - a cute little sweet, cuddly baby.

Candon Paul is in 2nd grade and is a dependable little boy, handsome and smart, likes to play ball and takes good care of his sisters.

Amanda Jo is just what Rikki needs as she speaks right up about everything not only for herself but for Rikki too.  She is pretty, sweet and important.

Tiffany Lynn is everyone's sweetheart and she knows it and basks in this love, she is a real live doll.

Last week we had our Roger's Reunion and my family was in charge of it.  It was held  at "Sherwood Forrest"  over by Nutrioso, AZ and we had a good time.  It was a lot of work, but worth it.  I was real proud of my family they came through and really helped.  And my precious husband was with me all the way.  I could never have managed without him.  We even won the horseshoe pitching contest.  This is the second time we have got to bring the trophy home.  Here are some of Mom's favorite sayings that my grandkids used in their skit.

"Anything worth doing is worth doing right.
"Pretty is as pretty does."
"Beauty is only skin deep but ugly goes clear to the bone."
"Wilful waste, woeful want."
"All a steer can do is try."
"When the sun is in the west, that's when lazy folks work the best."
"When a string is in a knot patience will untie it, patience can do many things, did you ever try it?"
"Every old crow thinks hers is the blackest."
"Birds of a feather flock together."
"Still waters run deep."
"Water seeks its own level."
"Love goes where it's sent even if it's on a horse turd."
"You couldn't find your but with both hands."
"There's many a slip twist cup and lip."
"You can choose your friends but not your relatives."

40th Anniversary and Grandma Eva Willis Passed Away

Well here we go again, Loye left to work in the valley once again.

Many things have happened since I last wrote in this journal.

We finished working in the Mts. after spending the most enjoyable summer in a while, hauling wood, and being with our boys.

We have had good new and bad news.  The good news is that Rikki is doing much better and Loyelin had another boy in August.  He is a real cute baby they named him Daniel Martin Luis Aceves.  They get going with names and can't quit, but the baby is cute anyway.

December 3, 1985 was our 40th Wedding Anniversary and our whole family was here.  The kids had a party for us and it was really nice.  I love my children.

The bad news is that Grandma Willis passed away the last of November.  All of her children were there (and most of her grandchildren) at her passing.  She was a good lady and as a mother-in-law I loved her very much, she was always good to me and I will be glad to meet her again in the hereafter.
